Definition

People with blood pressure readings of 140/90 or higher, taken on at least two occasions, indicate high blood pressure. For those over the age of 60 are said to have high blood pressure with readings of 150/90 or higher. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is the most common cardiovascular disease.

Description

Blood pressure is determined by the force of blood pushing against artery walls as it courses through the body. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries are, the higher your blood pressure will be.

Hypertension can threaten healthy arteries and lead to life-threatening conditions such as heart disease and stroke. You can have high blood pressure for years without having any symptoms, fortunately, it can be easily detected and you can work with your doctor to control it.
